Behind the Scenes: The Magic of a Family Boat Photoshoot

A boat photoshoot is genuinely one of the most unique and peaceful ways to capture real family moments, especially along the Carolina coast. So, when this special family reached out, I knew right away that we were about to create something beautiful together. However, it had been years since their last family session. Now, with significant changes on the horizon, such as their oldest daughter recently getting engaged and preparing to join the Army, they wanted to pause and preserve this moment in time.

Hi, I’m Emily, a family, maternity, and newborn photographer based near Camp Lejeune, where I proudly serve military families in every season of life. For over eight years, I’ve helped families capture their most meaningful memories in natural, personal settings, whether it’s the quiet of home or the beauty of our coastal waterways. If you’re ready to tell your family’s story in a way that feels true to you, I’d love to help you plan a session that’s both peaceful and unforgettable. Let’s start your journey together.

The Joy of Photographing This Family’s Boat Photoshoot

Truly, this session was extra special. Dad is a retired military pilot who now flies for the airlines. His oldest daughter had just graduated from college and made the exciting decision to follow in his footsteps by joining the Army. So, she was leaving soon for boot camp and had also just gotten engaged. Therefore, with so many milestones happening at once, the family knew it was time for updated photos.

It had been years since their last professional session, so when they reached out, I was more than happy to say yes. From the start, they were looking for something relaxed and personal, something that genuinely felt like them. As I learned more about their story, an idea quickly came to mind that I knew would be the perfect fit.

Why a Boat Photoshoot? A Unique Way to Capture Connection

As part of the planning process, I sent the family a short questionnaire to learn more about what they love. That’s when I found out something special. They’re a boating family. My first thought was, why didn’t they mention this sooner?

Thankfully, instead of fighting beach crowds during a holiday weekend, I suggested something different. A boat photoshoot gave us everything we needed: privacy, beauty, and a setting that truly meant something to them. Here’s how it came together:

  • No crowds or stress: Holiday weekends can make beach sessions tricky. The boat provided us with a peaceful setting to focus on each other.
  • Part of their real life: Boating is something they already enjoy together, which makes it feel natural and easy.
  • A stunning location: We cruised to one of my favorite barrier islands in the North Carolina intercoastal. It’s quiet and full of beauty.
  • Just nature and us: We had the beach to ourselves with only a few birds nearby. It felt like a private slice of heaven.
  • Telling their story: Their boat was included in the photos because it’s an integral part of their family life. It helped tell their story honestly and beautifully.

Ultimately, this boat photoshoot became more than a photo session. It was a peaceful escape and a way to hold onto a meaningful season in their lives.

The Ideal Setting and Favorite Moments

Undoubtedly, there is something peaceful and almost magical about Coastal Carolina. Locals know it as a quiet place to escape. There are no cars, no loud beach crowds, and no distractions. Just soft sand, warm water, and a sunset that lights up the sky. It was the perfect spot for a boat photoshoot and an ideal match for this family’s story.

Some of my favorite moments from their session included:

  • Playing frisbee together on the sand as the sun started to set
  • Walking barefoot through the dunes, laughing and exploring
  • Sitting by the water and sharing sweet stories and memories
  • Splashing in the calm intercoastal, being playful and relaxed
  • Taking timeless family portraits on the boat with the golden sunset behind them

This family was so open and joyful. They trusted the process and allowed themselves to be fully present. That made every photo feel real and full of love.

Tips for Planning Your Own Boat Photoshoot

For starters, thinking about your own boat photoshoot? It can be as casual or dressed up as you want. For example, some families love to wear beachy coverups and keep it relaxed, while others prefer soft colors and coordinated outfits that photograph beautifully. No matter your style, I’m here to guide you every step of the way.

After booking, I help you choose what to wear and share my go-to locations. I even created a free styling guide to make it easy for you. You can grab it here.

Before your session, I will work with you to plan the best time to leave the dock. I send exact location pins to the captain of the family, and we backtrack from sunset to find the perfect timing. Typically, most sessions begin about an hour before sunset, allowing us to capture that soft, golden light. I can meet you at your home or at your marina, whatever is most convenient for your family.

In fact, boat owners are also responsible for making sure everything on board is safe and ready. Most families are already familiar with these safety rules and have all the equipment needed.

A boat photoshoot provides a peaceful and personal setting that fosters a natural connection. Whether you’re looking for something fun, cozy, or elegant, we’ll create something beautiful together.

Mama to three wild boys and two sassy little girls. By far raising them is the most important job I have. I’m addicted to my faith, family, tacos, and true crime podcasts. I’m most inspired by all things motherhood.

Motherhood can be tender and sweet, but also chaotic and imperfect. Capturing all the beauty and love in all those imperfect moments is why I do what I do. As a mom of 5, I know also how crazy life gets and also how fast time goes. The days are slow, but man do those years go fast.
