What Actually Happens During a Maternity Session (And Why You Don’t Need to Know How to Pose)

One of the first things almost every mom says to me before her maternity session is some version of:

“I have no idea what I’m doing in front of a camera.”

That’s incredibly normal.

Most women booking a maternity photoshoot near Wilmington, Hampstead, or Camp Lejeune are not showing up feeling like models. They’re showing up tired, uncomfortable, emotional, swollen, excited, nervous, and somewhere between “I can’t wait to meet this baby” and “nothing in my closet fits anymore.”

As a mom of five myself, I completely understand that feeling.

And if you’ve been putting off booking maternity photos because you’re worried you’ll look awkward or feel uncomfortable the entire time, I want you to hear this clearly:

You are not expected to know how to pose.

That’s my job.

My role during your maternity photos is to guide you through the entire experience in a way that feels natural, relaxed, and never overly stiff or forced. Most of the moms you see on my website started their session saying they were nervous, too.

Then, somewhere between walking barefoot through the sand, laughing with their husband, and finally taking a deep breath by the water… they stop thinking about the camera entirely.

That’s when the magic happens.

Hi, I’m Emily, the photographer behind Emmy Jo Photography. I photograph maternity sessions for families throughout Wilmington, Hampstead, Jacksonville, Topsail Beach, and the Camp Lejeune area, specializing in soft, natural beach maternity photos that feel emotional, connected, and effortless.

If you’ve been thinking about booking a maternity or newborn session, My Maternity + Newborn package is designed to capture both the beauty of pregnancy and those first sweet newborn days. It’s the perfect way to document your entire motherhood journey from beginning to baby. You can learn more benefits here!

Why So Many Moms Feel Nervous Before Their Maternity Session

I can’t tell you how many women start their maternity session by apologizing to me.

They’ll say things like:

“I’m awkward in photos.”
“I don’t know what to do with my hands.”
“I’ve gained so much weight.”
“My husband hates taking pictures.”
“I’m not photogenic.”

And every single time, I tell them the same thing:

You don’t have to perform for me.

You don’t need modeling experience to have beautiful maternity photos.

Most moms feel disconnected from their bodies during pregnancy at some point. Some feel absolutely beautiful. Some feel exhausted and uncomfortable. Most feel both, depending on the day.

That’s why I approach every maternity photoshoot gently. My job isn’t to make you look like someone you’re not. It’s to help you slow down long enough to actually see the beauty in this season while you’re living it.

Especially for military spouses near Camp Lejeune, I know these seasons can feel even more emotional. Between deployments, long workups, and the fact that life may look completely different after the next PCS move, documenting your pregnancy is about more than just pretty photos. These images become part of your family’s story.

Wondering when the best time to book maternity photos is? I can guide you through that as well with this blog!

What Actually Happens During Your Maternity Session

A lot of people picture a maternity session as standing stiffly on the beach, smiling at the camera the entire time.

That’s not how I photograph at all.

Most of your session feels more like movement and conversation than “posing.”

I gently guide you the entire time so you never have to wonder what to do next. Sometimes I’ll demonstrate something first. Sometimes I’ll lightly adjust where your hands fall or how you’re standing. Most of the direction I give is incredibly simple and natural.

Things like:

  • “Walk toward me slowly.”
  • “Lean into him a little.”
  • “Close your eyes for a second.”
  • “Brush your hair back.”
  • “Slowly move your hand across your belly.”
  • “Take a deep breath.”

That’s it.

During your maternity session, I’m constantly watching the little details behind the camera. The way your dress moves in the breeze, the light hitting your face, the connection between you and your partner, and the way your hands naturally rest on your belly. Most of the time, all it takes is a few gentle prompts to create images that feel soft, emotional, and real.

Nothing is rushed.
Nothing is overly posed.
And you are never left wondering if you’re “doing it right.”

Why Beach Maternity Sessions Feel So Natural

One of the reasons I love photographing maternity sessions along the coast near Wilmington and Topsail Beach is that the beach naturally creates movement everywhere.

The wind catches your dress.
The waves slow you down.
You walk differently in the sand.
Everything softens a little.

That’s why beach maternity photos feel so emotional and effortless.

Usually, somewhere in the middle of your session, you stop focusing on the camera altogether. You’re focused on your husband reaching for your hand. The ocean breeze hits your skin. The excitement of knowing your baby will be here soon.

And those are almost always the images that end up meaning the most years later.

Not the perfectly posed ones.
The real ones.

As a maternity photographer serving coastal North Carolina, I use that movement intentionally during every session because it allows your photos to feel connected instead of stiff. The beach does half the work for us, honestly, especially during that soft golden light right before sunset.

The Moment Everything Starts to Shift

There’s usually a moment during every maternity session where I can physically see the nerves start to disappear.

This is honestly one of my favorite parts of what I do.

Because so many moms walk into their maternity photoshoot feeling self-conscious, and then leave saying:

“That was way easier than I expected.”

Or

“I actually felt beautiful.”

And that matters deeply to me.

Pregnancy can feel incredibly vulnerable. Your body is changing constantly. Your emotions are all over the place. Some days you feel powerful, and some days you barely recognize yourself in the mirror.

But when I look at you during your shoot, I don’t see flaws.

I see strength.
Softness.
Love.
Anticipation.
A woman growing an entire human being.

And you deserve to have that documented beautifully.

You Don’t Need to Be “Good at Photos”

I promise you, the women you see on my website aren’t professional models.

They’re real moms just like you and me.

Many of them felt nervous before their maternity session, too.

But the goal of your session is not perfection.

The goal is connection.

One day, your child will look back at these photos and see the way you held them before you even met them. They won’t care whether your hair stayed perfect in the wind or whether their older sibling cooperated every second.

They’ll see love.

And those are the kinds of images that matter.

If you need some inspiration from my previous work and outfit ideas, my Instagram here shows just how beautiful you can look in your maternity photos!

Planning Your Maternity Session Near Wilmington or Camp Lejeune

Most of my maternity sessions take place on the beaches near Wilmington, Topsail, Surf City, and Camp Lejeune because the coast offers a calm, natural environment for photos.

If you’re currently expecting and thinking about booking maternity photos, I typically recommend reaching out during your second trimester so we can plan everything together well before baby arrives.

From wardrobe guidance to choosing the perfect beach location, I walk you through the entire process so you never feel overwhelmed trying to figure everything out on your own.

And if you want to document both your pregnancy and those first newborn days, my Maternity + Newborn Bundle is one of the most-loved experiences I offer for growing families here in coastal North Carolina.

You deserve photos that remind you how beautiful this season really was, even if it didn’t always feel that way in the moment.

And I’d love to help you preserve it.

You can contact me here to start planning your maternity photoshoot, ask questions, or talk through what kind of session feels right for you.

WELCOME

Mama to three wild boys and two sassy little girls. By far raising them is the most important job I have. I’m addicted to my faith, family, tacos, and true crime podcasts. I’m most inspired by all things motherhood.

Motherhood can be tender and sweet, but also chaotic and imperfect. Capturing all the beauty and love in all those imperfect moments is why I do what I do. As a mom of 5, I know also how crazy life gets and also how fast time goes. The days are slow, but man do those years go fast.
