One of the big questions I get often is whether families should dress like they’re taking photos in the mountains.
The answer is usually no.
Our coastal fall still feels light, airy, and natural. Even though temperatures start cooling down, the beach has its own personality. Heavy sweaters, dark flannels, and bulky layers can feel out of place against the soft sand and ocean.
Instead, I encourage families to lean into the beach while adding just a touch of fall.
Consider clothing items such as flowy dresses, lightweight knits, and linen or cotton fabrics. Bare feet in the sand add a beautiful touch, and soft layers instead of thick jackets help create interest without feeling heavy or overwhelming.

This is probably my biggest piece of styling advice.
Start with Mom, every single time.
I know it’s tempting to shop for the kids first because they’re usually easier to dress. But once you find an outfit that makes you feel beautiful and comfortable, everything else falls into place.
As moms, we’re often the last person we think about. But chances are, you are the one who is going to treasure these photos for decades, and you deserve to love how you feel in them.
I always tell my clients to choose something that won’t need constant adjusting and that is comfortable. They should be able to move, walk, hug their babies, and twirl in it.
Those little moments are what create the magic in fall family photos.
The Best Colors for Fall Family Photos at the Beach
Beach colors don’t have to mean bright summer shades.
Some of my favorite color palettes for fall family photos include:

- Ivory
- Soft beige
- Camel
- Warm taupe
- Dusty blue
- Sage green

- Terracotta
- Soft olive
- Warm blush
- Muted mustard
These colors complement the sand, sea oats, and sunset without matching or competing with them.
I also love mixing textures instead of adding bold patterns. A light knit sweater, a linen dress, or a gauzy fabric adds beautiful interest while keeping the overall look timeless.
How to Coordinate the Whole Family Without Looking Too Matchy

Today, I encourage families to coordinate instead.
Choose two or three main colors, then let everyone wear different pieces within that palette.
Here is an example of a great place to start. Mom would be in a flowing cream dress, and dad would compliment her in a light tan button down shirt. One child could wear dusty blue, and another child wearing soft sage. Finally, the baby can be wrapped in a cozy neutral knit.
This way, everything works together without everyone looking identical.

There are a few things I usually recommend skipping.
Try to avoid:
- Neon colors
- Bright athletic clothing

- Tiny stripes that can photograph oddly
- Matching graphic T-shirts
- Bulky coats
- Stiff fabrics that don’t move
These items can tend to feel distracting and out of place in a soft beachy background. Little choices like sticking with more neutrals help keep the focus exactly where it belongs, which is always on your family and connection.
